Moeen Ali named Birmingham Phoenix captain for 2024
NEWSThe England icon will lead Birmingham Phoenix for a fourth season
England all-rounder Moeen Ali will captain his hometown club Birmingham Phoenix for a fourth straight season in the Men's Competition.
Moeen was born and raised just a few miles away from Edgbaston and has scored 485 runs - behind only Liam Livingstone for Phoenix - and taken 12 wickets in 21 appearances. He led Phoenix to the final in the inaugural Men's Competition in 2021 before narrowly missing out on a place in the Eliminator the following year.
Moeen will once again have the likes of Livingstone, Ben Duckett and Chris Woakes to call upon, with new recruits such as Naseem Shah and Sean Abbott boosting his squad.
Moeen was a part of the England team which won the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2019 and the side which won the ICC T20 World Cup two years later. He has played 298 times for his country.
Australian all-rounder Ellyse Perry was previously named as Phoenix's captain for the Women's Competition, having been forced to give up the role in 2023 due to a knee injury. Eve Jones took up the mantle in her place.
Moeen Ali said:
“We have an explosive batting line-up and we want to play an exciting brand of cricket. The last few years I feel we haven’t reached our potential, but I know we’re close.
“We have an incredibly talented group and with a sold out Edgbaston cheering us on, we believe we can beat anybody.”
