The Young English Stars at The Hundred
Which youngsters will light up The Hundred in 2023? Ahead of this year’s competition, we’ve had a look at some of the most gifted young English players set to feature.
Some have already represented England; others are knocking on the door. There are talents to keep an eye on across all eight teams.
Birmingham Phoenix
Issy Wong
Wong, 21, has already represented England in Test cricket, One-Day and Twenty20 internationals. The fast bowler has showcased her pace at home and abroad, making history earlier this year by taking the first hat-trick of the Women’s Premier League in India.
Will Smeed
Opening batter Smeed, 21, was a breakout star of the inaugural edition of The Hundred, blasting his runs at the top of the order for the Phoenix. In 2022 he became the first player in the history of the competition to hit a hundred, reaching three figures off 50 balls against Southern Brave.
London Spirit
Danielle Gibson
All-rounder Gibson made her international debut in the Women’s Ashes this year, hitting the winning runs at Lord’s as England triumphed over Australia in the Twenty20 International series. The 22-year-old impressed with the bat in the first season of The Hundred, smashing her runs at a strike rate of 180, and with the ball in the second, taking five wickets.
Zak Crawley
An aggressive opening batter for England in Test cricket, Crawley is a fluent ball-striker who can flay bowlers to all parts when at full flow. The 25-year-old made five appearances for the Spirit in the 2022 competition and will be looking to put on a show at Lord’s in 2023.
Manchester Originals
Sophie Ecclestone
While the left-arm spinner has played more than 125 matches for her country, Ecclestone is still just 24, with plenty of years left to continue her dominance as one of the best bowlers on the planet. She will captain the Originals in the Women’s Competition this year.
Josh Tongue
Fast bowler Tongue has had a breakout summer for England, making his international debut at Lord’s against Ireland. He celebrated his bow by taking five wickets and now the 25-year-old is set to make his first appearance in The Hundred.
Northern Superchargers
Bess Heath
Keeper Heath is an aggressive middle order batter who has impressed in her recent outings for England ‘A’, blasting runs against Australia earlier this summer. She plies her trade for Northern Diamonds in regional cricket and hit a crucial 44 when her side won the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy at Lord’s in 2022.
Harry Brook
One of the most exciting batting talents in world cricket, Brook, 24, has thrived in Test cricket for England in his brief career so far and was one of the first stars of The Hundred, leading in runs for Northern Superchargers in the 2021 edition of the competition.
Oval Invincibles
Alice Capsey
Capsey, still a teenager, is a prodigiously talented all-rounder who has been a key part of Oval Invincibles’ back-to-back titles in the Women’s Competition. Her aggressive brand of batting has been seen in international cricket, too, with Capsey having made her England debut in 2022.
Will Jacks
A blasting presence at the top of the batting line-up and a more than handy off-spin bowler, Jacks, at 24, has already represented England in all three international formats. He also holds the record for the highest-ever individual score in The Hundred, having hit an unbeaten 108 against Southern Brave in the 2022 tournament.
Southern Brave
Lauren Bell
Right-arm seam bowler Bell has become an England regular, playing in every match of the recent Women’s Ashes. The 22-year-old was the second-highest wicket-taker in the 2022 Women’s Competition, taking 11 wickets to help the Brave reach the final.
Rehan Ahmed
An exciting leg-spin bowler and attacking batter, Ahmed, still just 18, has already represented England, taking seven wickets in his debut Test match against Pakistan last year. That stunning introduction was a historic one too – he was the youngest man to take five wickets in an innings on Test debut.
Trent Rockets
Bryony Smith
Having begun her Hundred career at Welsh Fire, Smith – a top-order batter and spin bowler – joined Trent Rockets in 2022. She made her England debut as a 20-year-old and last featured in international cricket against India last year.
Sam Cook
Seam bowler Cook was the star of the final of the 2022 Men’s Competition, taking 4-18 to help the Rockets to a dramatic win over Manchester Originals at Lord’s. While the 25-year-old has not yet represented his country, he has featured for England Lions, the national team’s reserve side.
Welsh Fire
Georgia Davis
A spin bowler, Georgia Davis took a combined four wickets from 55 balls across 2021 and 2022 for Trent Rockets. She is yet to represent England but will now be looking to impress for Welsh Fire.
Ollie Pope
A swashbuckling batter who is one of the finest young talents in English cricket. The 25-year-old has even been named England's vice-captain, so Welsh Fire will be hoping he can lead them up the table.
