Young stars of The Hundred 2022

We've picked out the young players who made a huge impact on The Hundred in 2022!

Sophia Smale - Oval Invincibles

In 2021, it was Alice Capsey, the Invincibles' breakthrough star. In 2022, that honour was Sophia Smale's.

The 17-year-old spinner proved a revelation with the ball, claiming eight wickets throughout the competition.

She showed a particular skill for forcing caught and bowleds, with three of the wickets being return catches.

But perhaps our favourite moment of Smale's was this interview with her grandfather - and her biggest inspiration - as she won the final at Lord's.

Laura Wolvaardt - Northern Superchargers

The South African batter is only 23 and yet she is taking the cricketing world by storm.

Since her international debut aged 16, she's made more than 100 appearances for her country, and showed The Hundred audiences her full capabilities.

She topped the run charts with 286 and made the highest score of the competition this year, with a not out 90.

Wolvaardt was exceptional and so nearly helped her Superchargers side to the Eliminator.

Lauren Bell - Southern Brave

For a second year running, Lauren Bell showed why she's one of the most promising fast bowlers around.

She claimed 12 wickets last year and backed that up with 11 this time around, also taking the best figures of the 2022 Women's Competition: four wickets for ten runs.

Her bowling was, at times, unplayable, with a mix of deception by changing her pace and exceptional movement through the air. Mady Villiers was on the receiving end of one such beauty in the final!

Will Smeed - Birmingham Phoenix

The history-maker. Phoenix's 20-year-old gem.

It took until the 76th match of The Hundred for the first player to reach three figures, but Smeed did it in some style.

The 2021 winners, Southern Brave, were subjected to a masterful display of hitting - the opener bringing up his milestone from just 49 balls.

His innings included eight fours - the first of which was off the first ball of the match - and six sixes.

Will Jacks - Oval Invincibles

Like London buses, one hundred comes and so does a second in quick succession - this time off the bat of Will Jacks.

His smashing 108 from just 48 balls, Brave again on the receiving end, became the highest score ever in The Hundred.

It was a fabulous display of power-hitting by the 23-year-old, enhanced by the fact that none of his teammates passed 11. Eight sixes came in his innings, including the shot to reach the hundred.

Josh Little - Manchester Originals

Little ended this year's The Hundred with the best bowling figures in the competition - taking 5 wickets for just 13 runs in Manchester Originals' victory over Oval Invincibles that secured their place in the Eliminator.

He took 13 wickets in total, including two in the final, to finish one short of being the leading wicket-taker. Little's feat is particularly impressive given he played just five matches as a replacement for Sean Abbott.

The fast bowler has already made more than 60 international appearances for Ireland at just 22, and has a big future ahead of him.
