The importance of the all-rounder
FEATURECricket is a team game, meaning everyone has a role to play in victory or defeat but few roles have more of an impact on the outcome of a match than the all-rounder…
For those who aren’t familiar, an all-rounder is a player who is able to consistently perform well with both bat and ball.
Because of this ability to have a say in both innings, an all-rounder can be one of the most important parts of a team. If they show up, the team tends to do well. Here’s a look at a few who have done so in The Hundred so far.
Hayley Matthews
Playing for the Welsh Fire, Matthews has arguably been their most influential player in the competition so far. She currently leads the way for runs scored and wickets taken in her side and ranks 4th and 6th in those respectively overall in the competition.
Moeen Ali
The Birmingham Phoenix captain is key to his team not just with the captaincy but with his spin bowling and destructive batting. He is currently 3rd in the run scoring charts with 189 runs and has taken four wickets during his spells so far. He has helped guide his side to top of the standings for the men so far and has been a big help in reaching that point.
Dane van Niekerk:
Not only a key figure as the Oval Invincibles captain, van Niekerk can cause problems for the opposition with both bat and ball. She already has six wickets, only second in her team to Tash Farrant who has 11, and is a top scorer for her team with 187 runs in the competition.
Samit Patel
An experienced figure in the Trent Rockets lineup, Patel loves performing at Trent Bridge as he has done for years. He has already racked up over 100 runs for the Rockets so far and has taken six wickets in his bowling spells too. His appearances and performances so far have helped guide the Rockets to second in the table.
Nat Sciver
An England star, Sciver has shown her ability to score quick runs and take vital wickets. So far, she has three wickets for the Trent Rockets and has scored an impressive 190 runs, the second highest in the women’s competition so far. If the Rockets are to sneak into the top three, Sciver will have to play a big part for them.
