Northern Superchargers - The journey so far
FEATUREThe Superchargers are at the halfway stage of their campaigns so we take a look at their journey in The Hundred
Whilst the men's half of the competition have gotten off to a great start, it has been even better for the women's side who remain unbeaten at this midpoint. We take a look at how we got to this stage and what is to come from the second half of the journey.
On the women’s half, they started off with a match against the Welsh Fire at Headingley. The away side started off with setting a score but for the Superchargers, Linsey Smith’s 3 wickets came in crucial as they restricted the Fire to 130 runs.
In the second innings, the Headingley side had the batting of Jemimah Rodrigues to thank for a comprehensive victory. Rodrigues scored 92 runs from 43 balls, a current top score from a batter in The Hundred.
The winning form then continued away at Trent Bridge. The Superchargers hit another big score with the bat in the first innings, Rodrigues once again impressing with 60 runs from 41 balls.
In the second innings, the away side managed to restrict the Trent Rockets with their bowling. Katie Levick managed to take 2 wickets and had a good economy, only going at a run a ball from 20-deliveries. The Rockets only managed to get 122 runs, meaning the Superchargers made it 2 wins from 2.
Unfortunately the third match up at Old Trafford was rained off, meaning both sides took a point each from the tie. However, the break in cricket didn’t stop the Superchargers’ winning form. This time they faced the Oval Invincibles at home. Alice Davidson-Richards’ 42 runs helped her side set a score of 109 in the first innings.
Davidson-Richards had another part to play in the match, this time with the ball. She took 2 wickets and managed to deny the away side from scoring many runs from her bowling. In the end, the Superchargers won by 4 runs with the game going down to the wire.
Still unbeaten, the Northern Superchargers have put themselves into a good position to finish in the top three but with half of their matches still to go, must be wary of dropping the ball on their fellow competitors.
On the men’s side of the competition, it was a tough start but they have managed to turn it around. They opened in a high scoring match against the Welsh Fire at Headingley. The away side batted first and set a score of 173 thanks to the quick runs of Jonny Bairstow, Ben Duckett, Glenn Phillips and Jimmy Neesham.
With the bat, the Superchargers got off to a quick start with Adam Lyth but lost him 14 balls in. Harry Brook’s 62 from 31 brought them back into the game but it wasn’t quite enough as they lost by 10 runs.
It was then a tight match at Trent Bridge. In the first innings, the Superchargers lost 3 quick wickets but Harry Brook’s 38 and John Simpson’s 42 settled the side again. The wickets quickly fell towards the end as the away side looked to add quick runs to their score, notching up 132 runs.
The Rockets also had wickets falling relatively quickly, but opener Alex Hales dug in and his 40 from 34 guided his team to victory, despite the Superchargers taking 8 wickets shared across the bowling attack.
The third match at Old Trafford was abandoned due to weather but the break not only gave the Superchargers their first point but a chance to shift momentum too.
That shift of momentum came at Headingley against the Oval Invincibles. Jason Roy’s 52 to open the scoring put the home side under pressure early on with Tom Curran doing the same late on with 34 runs. However, Adil Rashid’s 3 wickets for just 13 runs made him the pick of the bowlers.
Chasing 128 runs, the Superchargers got off to a great start through Chris Lynn, who got 48 runs. Harry Brook did what he had done so well in The Hundred and accelerated the scoring too, hitting 47 runs to win the match with 3 balls to spare.
Whilst it was a tough start to The Hundred for the men’s side, they have managed to turn it around with points from their last two matches. With the table still so tightly contested, they are back in the battle for that top 3.
